THE LION IN WINTER
THANK YOU BOSTON FOR AN AMAZING RUN!!
SUSAN MULFORD OF
BOSTON AND BEYOND WRITES:
“Let the games begin as Henry II, magnificently played by Anthony Mullin, delights in playing games with the lives of all around him, including trying to manipulate Eleanor to sign over her inheritance of Aquitaine, a handsomely large chunk of France.. But he is no match for his wife, played by Elliot Norton award-winner, 3 time IRNE and 4 time DASH Award winning actor, Sehnaz Dirik. Ms. Dirik is a joy to watch as she literally becomes the embodiment of her character as she manipulates, lies, deceives in the most gracious manner.”
JEANNE DENIZARD OF BOSTON’S,
THE SLEEPLESS CRITIC WRITES:
“Like Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, The Lion in Winter visits some of the darkest places of the human condition, and not only reflects the frustration in a toxic marriage but explores neglect, betrayal, grief, mortality, oppression, war and an unscrupulous hunger for power…..The Lion in Winter boasts two powerful leads in Anthony Mullin as charismatic and egotistical King Henry II and Sehnaz Dirik as Queen Eleanor…. Mullin’s clever and shrewd King Henry to Dirik’s witty and scheming Eleanor put on more than a game face fueled by their passion and stubbornness vying for the upper hand in everything. Dirik is a natural at Eleanor’s underlying vulnerability behind her machinations with only the audience the wiser.”
JULES BECKER OF THE SOUTH END NEWS WRITES:
”Call "The Lion in Winter" a battle royal with both fire and feeling. A virtual chess game on a historical scale. Very clear at the Boston Center for the Arts' Plaza Theatre revival of "The Lion in Winter," is that a brilliant Theater Uncorked septet has turned this rarely staged drama into a must-see exploration of family dysfunction and the complex motivations of parents, children and lovers. Anthony Mullin's feisty Henry II has all of the ferocity of a human king of beast with his family, and Sehnaz Dirik's strong-willed Eleanor has both the strength of a lioness and the tenderness of a wife released from prison, battling for personal freedom and looking for understanding. Theater Uncorked's torrid "The Lion in Winter" is quite simply a revival for all seasons.
RICH FAHEY OF ON BOSTON STAGES WRITES:
Theater UnCorked has taken on the considerable challenge of “The Lion in Winter” and the Norton Award-winning troupe has authored a first-class production, grounded in fine performances and direction, onstage in The Plaza Theatre of the Boston Center for the Arts. As TheaterUnCorked – founded by Dirik and now in its sixth season — has evolved and grown, it has found its footing in downtown Boston, along the way elevating production values, hiring first-class directors, and taken on titles that are not often performed and not easy to produce. “The Lion in Winter” is a towering achievement for all concerned, and most worthy of your time and attention.
SCOTT REEDY OF BROADWAY WORLD WRITES:
“Theater UnCorked's THE LION IN WINTER Roars with Royal Intrigue. After her Elliot Norton Award-winning portrayal of the corrosive Martha in “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” last season, Theater Uncorked’s producing artistic director Dirik is once again in powerhouse mode, delivering another impressively nuanced portrayal. Dirik’s under-siege Queen is equal parts force and emotion – with a touch of humor, too – as she strives to outmaneuver her husband.”
